How To Dunk A Basketball If You Are Short

In this article today I would like to discuss several tips, tricks, and tactics that absolutely anybody can use to dunk a basketball even if you are short.

Basketball is by far the most exciting game in the world and one of the most exciting parts of the game is when somebody throws down a massive dunk in somebody else’s face. Everybody that has ever played basketball has dreamed about dunking, but unfortunately most people never develop the skill.

That’s too bad because just about anybody can dunk a basketball, no matter how tall they are if they just follow the simple tips that I’m going to talk about in this article today.

It’s a common misperception that you have to be tall in order to dunk it. That simply is not true. Even short people can dunk a basketball and I’ve seen people who are only about 5 foot 2 throw down like the tallest of them. When you don’t have the luck of being born tall you have to focus on other areas such as building up your muscles and that’s what I’m going to talk about now.

Shorter people need to work on four key areas if they ever want to dunk a basketball. The good news is that as long as you work on these areas and build up the muscles in them adequately, you should have no problem dunking a basketball no matter how tall you are or in this case, how short you are.

The first area to focus on is the most obvious, the calf muscles in your legs. Any exercise that you do that focuses on building up these muscles will be beneficial so do whatever you want. But for me the best thing I’ve found was to wear ankle weights and jog for 20 to 30 minutes a day up and down staircases, preferably in your school’s gym where most school gyms have great long and tall staircases or bleachers that you can run up and down. Do this for three or four months and you’ll be able to dunk it no problem.

The next two areas to focus on are your abdomen muscles and your lower back muscles. When you jump, your body extends and much of the energy is transferred through your abdomen and your lower back. Anything you can do to strengthen these two areas will go a long way to helping you dunk a basketball.

Finally the last area focus on our your hands. Taller people generally have larger hands which makes it easier for them to palm a basketball which makes it easier, therefore, to dunk a basketball because they don’t have to jump as high if you can palm the ball.

So any exercises that you can do to strengthen your hand muscles are beneficial. Of course this doesn’t matter if you throw down a two-handed dunk but if you’re not tall enough to jump that high you may have to do a one-handed dunk and in that case you’ll need to palm the ball. Squeezing a tennis ball is a good exercise for this.

So there you have four simple areas that you can work on strengthening that will allow you to dunk a basketball no matter how tall you are. You’d be surprised how quickly you can dunk a basketball when you start working on these four simple areas.
